The focus of this site is on Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT) of addiction -- a term coined to encompass non-methadone compounds, but at the same time to clearly support the concept of maintenance treatment using medications that act at the opiate receptors to stabilize the course of the addictive disorder.  An opioid agonist is any compound that will occupy an opioid receptor and produce a morphine-like effect.  It is my intention to provide accurate information on a broad range of subjects related to this valuable treatment modality.
The intended audience includes physicians, nurses, counselors, patient advocates, researchers, policy makers, regulators, criminal justice system, and anyone whose life is somehow touched by this form of addiction.  The most important elements in this effort are the patients in treatment, those in need of treatment, and their families, friends, and loved ones.
The goal is to promote effective and affordable treatment offered with compassion, dignity, and respect and with a minimum of disruption of the lives and routines of the patients.  Through communication, education, and exchange of ideas we hope to eliminate the ignorance, stigma and prejudice associated with this disorder and its treatment.
As a physician-clinician and treatment provider there will be a strong emphasis on sound and effective treatment policies and procedures. Sample forms and documents will be shared along with suggested clinical guidelines and procedures for dealing with common problems.  Links are provided to related sites and a means of providing feedback and communicating your concerns, needs, questions, and suggestions for improving the website.
